Physocarpus: Commonly called ninebark, is a deciduous shrub native to North America, with eye-catching foliage and with some varieties displaying fascinating peeling bark in varied colors. They all will yield pretty 5-petaled, pale pink to white blossoms with wispy stamens that grow in groups of flowers called corymbs. Ninebark is very adaptable and will grow in full sun to partial shade.

Mandevilla: A perennial in zones 10 and 11, the Mandevilla offers a variety of colors. Fantastically fragrant, it is also called Brazilian Jasmine and can be grown in containers and moved indoors and out as the weather dictates. This vigorous climber will appreciate a trellis or other gymnastic equipment!

Creeping Phlox: An early bloomer, creeping phlox is a perennial in Zones 3 through 8. It will thrive in full sun to partial shade and makes a fantastically fragrant flowering ground cover with semi-evergreen foliage. Use it for borders, along walkways or to accent and define your cutting garden.

Arborvitae: This coniferous evergreen thrives in acidic or alkaline soils, is drought and heat-tolerant, and will withstand urban pollution levels, as well as high humidity. Considered small, relative to similar conifers, you can expect this Wintergreen or White Cedar to grow to between 30 and 65 feet.
